Everything above is Western anatomy: named muscles, origins, insertions, actions. It is accurate and it is not the only map. Ayurveda, yoga’s sister science, charts the same body by a different logic, and if we practice in this tradition it is worth knowing what that map says, and where it does and does not line up.
Its anatomical unit is the marma: a vital point where, in Sushruta’s definition, flesh, vessels, tendons, bones and joints meet, and where life force concentrates. The Sushruta Samhita enumerates 107 of them, classifies them by which tissue dominates, and grades them by what happens when they are injured, from immediately fatal to merely painful. That last detail matters for reading the whole system honestly: marma began as surgical and battlefield knowledge, a map of where not to be struck, and was only later turned toward therapy. It is a trauma map before it is a wellness map.
The overlaps with the diagram above are real and unsurprising, since both traditions were looking at the same body. Many marma sit exactly where a modern chart would mark a neurovascular bundle, a joint capsule, or a tendon insertion: Kurpara at the elbow, Janu at the knee, Kshipra in the web of the hand, Talahridaya at the centre of the palm and sole. When a teacher tells us to press the four corners of the foot, or notices that the hip opens once the sole releases, marma theory and the tibialis and plantar fascia are describing one event in two vocabularies.
That the psoas shortens in chronic sitting is anatomy, and it can be measured. That a marma concentrates prana is a claim internal to a tradition, and it has not been shown by the same methods. That Ayurveda is an unbroken five-thousand-year science is a third kind of claim again, historical, and it is the one that holds up least well.
Lineage is part of the validity, and not the whole of it. Charaka and Sushruta record real clinical observation, refined across centuries by practitioners with everything at stake, and a useless idea rarely survives two thousand years of people needing it to work. What lineage cannot do is settle a question of physiology. The practical bridge is prakriti, constitution. Ayurveda would say that the body we are reading this diagram with is not generic: a light, dry, mobile vata frame stabilizes where a dense kapha frame mobilizes, and a driven pitta practitioner is the one most likely to tear a hamstring proving a point. Bernie Clark’s Your Body, Your Yoga makes a structurally identical argument from bone rather than dosha: skeletal variation means one alignment cue cannot fit every body, and the sensation we are chasing may be blocked by our own femur. Two traditions, one conclusion, which is the most interesting kind of agreement.
Light, dry, cold, mobile. Hypermobile joints, cracking, cold hands, a nervous system that startles. Asks for warmth, weight, slowness, and fewer novel shapes. The frame most at risk in a fast vinyasa.
Hot, sharp, intense. Strong digestion, strong opinions, competitive in a room with mirrors. Asks for cooling, longer exhales, and permission to leave a pose before winning it. The frame most likely to overstretch.
Heavy, stable, cool, steady. Dense tissue, real endurance, slow to warm and slow to injure. Asks for heat, pace, and standing back up. The frame that benefits most from being asked to sweat.
Prakriti is the constitution we were born with; vikriti is what is out of balance today. The instruction Ayurveda gives to a practice is simply to notice which one we are dressing for, since the same sequence that settles one body will aggravate another. That is not mysticism. It is the reason a class of thirty people cannot honestly be given one cue.

How they differ. Kaminoff is organized by asana and keeps breath mechanics in view throughout, which is why it is the one most teachers reach for. Long is the one to open when we want a single muscle drawn and named in a specific pose; his first volume sorts each muscle into the poses that contract it and the poses that stretch it, the same agonist-and-antagonist logic behind the strengthened-by and stretched-by pairing on this page. Long names the reflex beneath that logic: “During reciprocal inhibition, the central nervous system signals the target muscle to relax,” which is why deliberately contracting one muscle can help its opposite release rather than forcing a stretch through the joint. Coulter is the most demanding and the most rewarding, and his chapters on breathing and the pelvis are better than anything else on this list. Swanson is the visual reference. Clark is the corrective to all of them: the reason a cue that transforms one student does nothing for the next is often skeletal, not muscular, and no amount of effort changes the shape of a hip socket. His central practical distinction is between tension, the pull of tissue that can be stretched further with patient practice and is felt on the side away from the movement, and compression, bone meeting bone or flesh meeting flesh, felt in the direction of the movement and marking a hard limit no stretching will move. Much of what a chart of muscles reads as tightness is really one or the other, and only tension answers to effort. Kaminoff frames the same lesson from the joint outward: a joint’s range “is the product of the shape of the bones, the tone of the ligaments connecting the bones, and the engagement of the muscles that cross the joint.” Only the last of those three is a muscle, which is the deepest reason one chart of muscles cannot predict how far any particular body will travel in a pose.
Bernie Clark puts a number on it. Citing a study of what actually limits a joint in its midrange, he reports that the muscles account for roughly 41 percent of the resistance and the joint capsule for about 47 percent, so that “tightness in the muscles is not the major factor in limiting our range of motion: the joint capsule has a greater effect on our mobility than the muscles.” The tissues a chart of muscles cannot draw are the ones setting most of the limit.
A chart also shows muscle only from the outside, while the moving body is felt from within. The somatic teacher Graeme Lynn names the channels that carry that felt information: “the six self-senses, or kinaesthetic and proprioceptive senses, are balance, joint articulation, felt movement, tissue pressure, tissue tension and pain.” The same tissues the diagram draws are the ones a practitioner reads by sensation from inside the pose.
Myers argues that muscles do not act alone but along continuous myofascial lines, so that the plantar fascia, calves, hamstrings, erectors, and scalp behave as one superficial back line. Anyone who has felt a forward fold change after rolling a tennis ball under one foot has met the idea. It is a genuinely useful lens for a yoga practice, and it is more contested in anatomy than its popularity suggests. The continuity is not only theory: Myers has had this line dissected out intact from fresh tissue, one connected sheet from heel to skull. What stays partial is the evidence that force actually transmits along the whole length of it in a living, moving body. The lines are a real structure and a model of function at once, worth using and worth not overclaiming. Swanson’s Science of Yoga adds the tissue-scale version, and hedges it the same way: research suggests the collagen of healthy fascia lies in an organized criss-cross lattice, that inactivity and ageing let that order break down, and that steady movement may help reorganize it.
Every “strengthened by” and “stretched by” pairing above describes what a muscle can do, not what a given body should do on a given day, and that gap is where injuries live. Broad’s book is the honest counterweight to the rest of this shelf. He gathers the medical case literature the founding gurus stayed silent about: torn Achilles tendons from forcing Downward Dog, hips worn to the point of replacement, sciatic nerve injury after falling asleep in a seated forward fold, and the rare but catastrophic strokes traced to extreme neck loading. His account is contested, and fairly so, since critics found the framing alarmist and the stroke cases are rare enough that the risk to a careful practitioner is small. What is not contested is the reform it helped drive, the shift from the guru’s promise that a well-made pose is inherently safe to the plainer truth that a body registers load, not shape. The teacher Glenn Black, whom Broad quotes, puts the hard edge of it plainly, that a vigorous general class is the wrong container for bodies carrying hidden weaknesses. That is worth holding next to this diagram, which can name a muscle and its action but cannot see the hip socket, the artery, or the day. Leslie Kaminoff reads the oldest name for that balance, sthira and sukha, steadiness and ease, right down into the tissue, the same pairing Patanjali asks of a pose and the same one every living structure has to strike, so the anatomy mapped here and the stories told under the banyan tree are describing one body from two sides.
