Dana · the practice of giving

The Living Practice is free, and it will stay free. The philosophy, the sourced stories, the pose and muscle maps, the breath and meditation guides: none of it sits behind a paywall, and none of it ever will. Most of what is here descends from a living tradition that is not mine to sell. Yama teaches asteya and aparigraha, non-stealing and non-grasping. Keeping the teachings open is part of the living practice.

What a site still needs is upkeep: a domain, a place to live on the web, and the hours it takes to write new pages, check sources, and answer the questions that come in. If the work has been useful to you and you are able to give, your gift keeps it online and growing. If you are not able to give, please use everything here freely. That is the whole point.

On Dana

Dana is the Sanskrit word for generosity, the practice of giving freely without expectation of return. In the yogic tradition, teaching was never sold. It was offered, and those who received it and could give something back did so as an act of practice in its own right. The gift kept the teaching alive and available to the next person, including the one who could not pay.

That is the model here. Think of a gift not as a price for what you have already read, which was freely given, but as a way of holding the door open behind you. Every contribution is welcomed with gratitude, and none is ever required.

What your gift covers

This site is small and static, so it costs little to run, and I want to be plain about that. Your giving goes to three things: the domain that carries the name, the hosting that keeps the pages reachable, and the time that turns research and training into new pages. The tiers below are framed around hosting so you can see exactly what a gift sustains. Anything beyond the running costs funds the writing itself.

$8
A month online
Roughly one month of hosting. Keeps the tree standing and the pages reachable.
Give $8
$25
A season under the tree
About three months online, one turn of the seasons of practice.
Give $25
$100
A year, roots and all
A full year of hosting and the domain renewed. The site’s whole running cost, carried by one gift.
Give $100
Any amount
Your own measure
Give what feels right. Monthly giving opens here once Rooted Action’s nonprofit registration is complete.
Give a custom amount

A returning gift, even a few dollars whenever the season turns, is the most helpful of all: it turns upkeep from a worry into a rhythm, and it is what makes room for the research and writing that keep the site alive. Gifts go through PayPal to Ally Krupar.

Where the giving stands

This year’s upkeep

Once the year’s upkeep is met, giving does not stop mattering. It changes direction. Every gift beyond the running costs goes to two things: future trainings that let this work deepen, and lowering the cost of what Rooted Action offers, so that programming, workshops, and classes carry a smaller price and reach more people. This figure is kept honest by hand and updated as gifts arrive.

A promise, in the spirit of aparigraha: giving will never buy access to anything the rest of the site cannot reach for free. There is no members-only teaching, no locked page, no content held back for donors. A gift supports the commons. It never carves a private room inside it.

Get involved

Money is one form of dana. Time, knowledge, and attention are others, and this work is built from all of them. Rooted Action is in the process of incorporating as a nonprofit in Washington, DC, which means the circle of people carrying this work is about to grow. Each of the four offerings below is a real contribution, received with the same gratitude as any gift above.

Volunteer with Rooted Action
Help carry programming, workshops, classes, and community events as Rooted Action takes shape. Whatever your skills, there is a place for them.
Raise your hand
Contribute knowledge
Share a story as your lineage tells it, suggest a source worth reading, review a translation, or send a correction. The site deepens through many voices.
Share what you know
Practice and test
Take a sequence or a breath practice onto your mat, then write in about what the body found. Field notes from real practice shape every revision.
Send a practice note
Share the work
Pass the site along to a student, a teacher, or a friend who would use it. Every share widens the circle and keeps the teachings moving.
